Getting to Mount Cook at a glance
There is one way in. From Twizel you drive about 9 km north on State Highway 8, turn left onto State Highway 80 and follow it for about 55 km along Lake Pukaki to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. The road ends there. It does not continue over the main range to the west coast, so plan your route as a trip in and out.
Most visitors come by car from Christchurch or Queenstown. Without a car, there is a bus from Lake Tekapo and a shuttle day trip. Whatever you choose, allow for weather: snow can close State Highway 80.

Day trips and transfers to Mount Cook
Day tours from Christchurch, Queenstown and Tekapo, plus scenic flights and glacier trips once you arrive, with live prices and availability.
Christchurch to Mount Cook
From Christchurch it takes about 4 hours 15 minutes to the hotel. Staying at least one night gives you time for a walk and a second chance if the weather is poor. Our guide to where to stay shows the options in the village, Twizel and Tekapo.
Queenstown to Mount Cook
From Queenstown the drive takes 3 hours 15 to 30 minutes, and from Wānaka 2 hours 30 minutes. If you are based in Queenstown, note that trips to Milford Sound start there too. They have their own guide for Milford Sound from Queenstown.
If you plan to cross to Franz Josef or Fox Glacier afterwards, remember that the road from the village does not continue west. The route to the other side is covered in the guide to getting to Franz Josef.
Without a car: bus and shuttle
Only the Tekapo links are described in detail below.
Bus from Lake Tekapo
The InterCity bus takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. It leaves from the car park by the Dark Sky building at 1 Motuariki Lane and arrives at the Hermitage, in the Aoraki lobby. A partner service, GreatSights, may operate some departures. Fares and daily departures show only after you search for a date, so check them before you plan around the bus.
Shuttle from Tekapo, one way
With the Tekapo Shuttle, a single ticket costs NZ$90 for adults and NZ$72 for children (2026). The shuttle leaves Tekapo at 8 a.m. and leaves Mount Cook at 3 p.m., according to the operator's home page.
From Christchurch or Queenstown without a car
The Hermitage names Cheeky Kiwi and GreatSights for these routes. Timetables vary by day and season, and prices depend on the date, so confirm both when you book.
Bikes
Tekapo Shuttle does not carry bicycles at present.
Day trip from Lake Tekapo
One operator's day trip from Lake Tekapo, with 2026 details.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price | NZ$149 for adults, NZ$119 for children |
| Length | About 9 hours, all year, no minimum number of guests |
| Meeting point | Tekapo Four Square or the public car park next to it |
| Start time | 8 a.m. from September to May, 8:30 a.m. from June to August |
| Walk stops | Tasman Valley around 10:15 a.m., Hooker Valley around 11:30 a.m. |
| Afternoon | A shuttle between the Hooker Valley car park and the village every 30 minutes from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., return from the Hermitage at 3 p.m., Lake Pukaki stop around 4 p.m., back in Tekapo between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. |
The shuttle drives you but does not guide the walks, because the operator has no guiding permit. The programme depends on the weather. For the walk itself, see the Hooker Valley Track guide.
The last stretch: road, fuel and parking
Check road conditions with NZTA before you leave, because snow can close State Highway 80. The village has a self-service fuel pump that takes cards, so check the opening times before you rely on it. The hotel shop sells snacks, and the nearest shop is in Twizel, 66 km from the village. The page on Mount Cook Village covers what is available there.
Parking at White Horse Hill costs NZ$2.50 per 30 minutes, up to NZ$25 per day, and you pay by card. The first 20 minutes are free if you drive out within that time. You cannot reserve a space, and a permit does not guarantee a free one. A breach notice can cost NZ$75. The Tasman Valley car park is free. The national park guide lists the other rules.
Lake Pukaki lies on the way. See the page on Lake Pukaki for the lookout and the colour of the water.
