Mount Cook Tours Compared

How Mount Cook tours differ

Most visitors to Aoraki/Mount Cook walk the tracks on their own. Tours add what a walk cannot: a landing on snow, a boat among icebergs, a very dark sky or a ride from Lake Tekapo. The main choices are scenic flights from Mount Cook Airport, Glentanner and Tekapo, the Glacier Explorers boat trip from the Hermitage, stargazing and a transport-only day trip.

The examples below come from the operators' own pages. They show what one product costs, not a market range. A listed price is not a checkout total for every date, and a published offer does not show free seats on your day. Almost every trip depends on the weather.

The first five flights in the table leave from Mount Cook Airport. The Grand Traverse and Alpine Grandeur leave from Tekapo. Air Safaris lists its Grand Traverse prices as valid from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. The Helicopter Line flies from Glentanner Park: its Alpine Explorer is a 35-minute flight with an alpine landing, and you should allow about 1 hour for check-in, briefing and flight. Check the current fare on its booking page.

The main tour types

What each one is, and what to expect on the day.

Scenic flights

Flights start at Mount Cook Airport, Glentanner Park or Tekapo and run from 25 to 60 minutes. The Mount Cook Airport operator offers free transfers from accommodation in Mount Cook Village. Landings depend on the pilot's decision and the weather. See the full comparison on the scenic flights page. Flights from Tekapo also include a Franz and Fox route of 60 minutes at NZ$975 for adults. For flights over the main divide from the west side, see Franz Josef and Fox Glacier helicopter flights.

Glacier Explorers boat trip

You check in at the Activities Desk in the Hermitage 30 minutes before departure, take a bus to the valley and walk about 1.5 km (25 minutes) to the boat. The minimum age is 4. Children aged 4 to 14 pay from NZ$99, and a family of two adults and two children pays from NZ$576, booked by phone or email. The winter break runs roughly from mid-June to the end of August. Details are on the Tasman Glacier page.

Stargazing

Big Sky Stargazing starts at 21:30 and 23:30 in the current season, and the times change through the year. The minimum age is 8, and children aged 8 to 14 pay from NZ$94. If the weather rules out the sky, the listing gives a 45-minute planetarium session and a 75 percent refund, not a full one. At Tekapo, the Dark Sky Project Summit Experience costs NZ$239 for adults and children, runs about 1 hour 45 minutes and has a minimum age of 10. More on the Lake Tekapo page.

Tekapo day trip

The shuttle meets at the Tekapo Four Square or the public car park next to it, at 08:00 from September to May and 08:30 from June to August. Walk stops are planned at the Tasman Valley around 10:15 and the Hooker Valley around 11:30. The return leaves the Hermitage at 15:00. The shuttle drives but does not guide, and bikes are not carried. The operator says it has no guiding concession for the Hooker Valley.

What to check before you book

The wording differs more than the prices do.

Landing or flight only

A landing on snow is a separate feature from a flight over the glacier. Read the listing: some say "glacier landing", one says "alpine landing", and the Grand Traverse lists none. At the Helicopter Line, the route and the landing depend on the weather and the pilot's decision.

Weather and refunds

The Helicopter Line offers a rebooking or a full refund if it cancels for weather, and a minimum number of passengers applies. The boat trip gives a full refund or another date. Stargazing gives a partial refund. Do not carry one operator's terms over to another.

Passenger weight

Air Safaris asks heavier passengers to tell them when booking. Its pages give 125 kg on one and 130 kg on another, so ask when you book if you are near either figure.

Fees

The Tekapo shuttle states no booking fee and no card surcharge for optional activities booked on its own page. That is one operator, not a rule for all of them.

Seats on your day

Published pages show prices, not free seats. Book the boat trip, which needs a reservation, before you plan the rest of the day around it. For a day with several fixed times, see the weather page and keep one spare day.

Mount Cook tours: frequently asked questions

What is the best tour at Mount Cook?

That depends on what you want. A flight gives you the glacier from above, the boat trip takes you onto the Tasman Lake, and stargazing suits clear nights. The table above compares single examples, not a ranking.

How much does a Mount Cook scenic flight cost?

The listed 2026 prices above run from NZ$379 for a 25-minute Tasman Taster to NZ$975 for the 60-minute Franz and Fox route from Tekapo. These are single products for adults, and extras can change the final price.

Do I need to book in advance?

The Glacier Explorers boat trip needs a reservation. Published offer pages do not show free seats for your date, so check availability before you plan around any tour.

Is there a guided Hooker Valley walk?

The Tekapo day trip drops you at the Hooker Valley for a self-guided walk, and the operator says it has no guiding concession there. Walk details are on the Hooker Valley Track page.

What happens if the weather is bad?

It depends on the operator. The boat trip and the Helicopter Line offer a refund or a new date, and stargazing offers a partial refund. Icebergs, calving and a clear sky are not guaranteed.

Is this site run by a tour operator?

No. This is an independent guide with no link to the Department of Conservation, the national park, the Hermitage or any tour or flight operator.
