Mueller Hut at a glance
The route starts in Aoraki/Mount Cook Village or at White Horse Hill, climbs the steps to Sealy Tarns and then follows an alpine route to the hut. The Department of Conservation (DOC) gives about 2 hours from the village to Sealy Tarns, a further 2 hours to the hut and 3 hours for the descent to the village. This is not a relaxed half-day walk.
Above the tarns there is no maintained walking track. You follow orange markers over scree and steep rubble slopes, and snow changes the difficulty. Read the safety section below before you decide to go.

Sealy Tarns: the steps below the hut
The Sealy Tarns track is a steep stepped path that narrows as it climbs. It has 2,200 steps and gains 600 m of height. You reach it from the Kea Point Track, which starts in the village or at White Horse Hill.
There is no shelter and no alternative route on the climb. If the weather turns, go down. Snow and ice are possible from March to November. In winter the track can be extremely icy, you may need crampons and an ice axe, and avalanches are possible. Ask about conditions at the DOC Visitor Centre before you start.

Safety: an alpine route in every season
The conditions decide, not the calendar.
Summer, December to February
DOC describes the route as suitable for walkers with moderate tramping experience when conditions are good. Good conditions are not a guarantee, and weather can change fast at this height.
Winter, June to August
You need mountaineering experience, an ice axe and crampons, navigation skills and avalanche rescue equipment. If you do not have these, do not go.
Spring and autumn
These months can bring winter conditions. Treat them as winter until the DOC Visitor Centre tells you otherwise.
Avalanche danger
The danger is significant, especially from April to mid-November. Avalanches can happen at other times of year as well. Check the avalanche situation before you go.
Route finding
Follow the orange markers and return the same way. Do not try a shortcut straight down into the valley.
Visitor Centre
The DOC Visitor Centre at 1 Larch Grove is open daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October to April and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from May to September. It has information on tracks and mountain conditions, and a system for leaving your intentions.
