Lake Tekapo at a glance
Lake Tekapo (TakapΕ) is also a starting point for trips to Aoraki/Mount Cook. Three things bring people here: the small Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakeshore, stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve and flights that leave from Tekapo Airport. Mount Cook Village is about 1 hour 20 minutes away by bus, and the Hooker Valley car park is 1 hour 30 minutes by car.
The Dark Sky Reserve was designated in 2012 and covers 4,367 kmΒ², including Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin, according to DarkSky International. It is not a UNESCO title, and no one can promise a clear night.

Church of the Good Shepherd
The church is on Pioneer Drive. The rules come from the church itself.
Grounds and hours
The grounds are open from 09:00 to 20:00 in summer, from the start of daylight saving, and from 09:00 to 17:00 in winter, from its end. There is no access at night inside the fence.
The inside
The interior opens only in a limited way, with volunteers. The church's visit page lists Wednesday to Sunday, its home page Tuesday to Sunday, in both cases for a few hours between 10:00 and 15:00 and without a guarantee. Do not plan around it being open.
Cost
The church asks for a donation of NZ$5 at the entrance. A private opening or guided visit costs at least NZ$100 for up to two people and NZ$20 for each additional person. Arrange it in advance, at least a week ahead.
Rules
No photos inside on normal visits, no drones, no smoking. Keep quiet, do not climb fences and stay out of private weddings and funerals. Parking on Pioneer Drive is limited, and larger vehicles should park in the village near the Godley Hotel.
Professional photography
It needs a permit and payment: NZ$100 per 30 minutes, not on Sundays, with no night access and no exclusivity. Private ceremonies can close the grounds or the church for up to two hours.

| Summit Experience | Big Sky Stargazing | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Dark Sky Project, Tekapo | Mount Cook, with a short drive to the Star Base |

The Summit Experience includes transport from the base, a guide, telescopes and a thermal jacket. The path is a gravel slope of about 100 m with steps, so it is not wheelchair accessible. Arrive 15 minutes before the start, or 20 minutes according to the FAQ on the same page. Plan for 20. If the weather is unsuitable there is an indoor programme, and the FAQ also offers a rebooking, a voucher or a refund.
Big Sky is weather dependent. If it is cancelled, the Hermitage lists a 45 minute planetarium show and a 75 % refund. A minimum number of guests may apply.

The 60 minute flight is named after the west coast glaciers, which have their own guide at Franz Josef and Fox, and helicopter flights there are covered on that site. More options from Mount Cook itself are on the scenic flights page.
